Xylaria schweinitzii is a species of sac fungus known for its role in white rot development within woody plant tissues. It functions primarily as a wood-decay pathogen that breaks down lignin, effectively reducing the structural strength of trees. While it contributes to nutrient cycling in forests, it is considered a pest in managed landscapes.

The fungus targets a wide range of deciduous trees, with a particular affinity for oaks and maples. Vulnerable trees are those that have already suffered stress from drought, poor soil conditions, or physical wounding. It thrives by invading the vascular system and sapwood, eventually compromising the tree's internal architecture.

Symptoms are most visible when the fungus produces its fruiting bodies. These are characterized by club-shaped, dark, and often branched structures that emerge from the base of the trunk or exposed roots. Initially, these structures might appear greyish or white, but they darken and harden into a coal-like appearance as they mature.

Development and spread are heavily dependent on environmental conditions, specifically persistent moisture and lack of aeration around the root zone. The fungus disseminates through spores released from the fruiting bodies, which are then carried by wind or splashing rain to new hosts. Root-to-root contact is another common pathway for infection.

The economic and ecological impact of this fungus is significant due to its effect on tree stability. As the decay progresses internally, the tree loses its ability to support its own weight, leading to a high risk of windthrow. Preventive measures are crucial as there are no direct chemical curative treatments once the infection is deep within the heartwood.
