Description

The subclass Xylariomycetidae encompasses a diverse group of ascomycetous fungi. While many species are essential decomposers in nature, several act as significant plant pathogens capable of causing wood decay, limb dieback, and general decline in woody plants, posing a threat to both forestry and commercial orchards.

These pathogens primarily target various fruit trees, hardwoods, and ornamental shrubs. Infection typically occurs through physical wounding, including pruning cuts, frost cracks, or damage inflicted by insects and mechanical farm equipment, which exposes the xylem and provides an entry point for fungal colonization.

Typical symptoms involve the development of visible stromatic structures on the bark, often appearing as black, carbonaceous crusts or protruding fruiting bodies. Internally, the infection manifests as wood decay, which compromises the tree's structural integrity, leading to the gradual necrosis of limbs, leaf discoloration, and eventually the death of the host plant if the infestation becomes systemic.

The development and spread of Xylariomycetidae are favored by high humidity, poor orchard hygiene, and the presence of dead organic material that serves as a reservoir for spores. These spores are efficiently dispersed by wind and rain splashes, especially during wet seasons, allowing the pathogen to move rapidly between susceptible individuals in a plantation.

Effective management requires a proactive approach centered on sanitation: prompt removal of infected wood, sterilization of pruning tools to prevent cross-contamination, and the application of wound sealants to major cuts. Furthermore, maintaining tree vigor through appropriate fertilization and site management helps the plant to compartmentalize potential infections and resist fungal colonization.
