Zasmidium musae-banksii is a fungal pathogen responsible for sooty blotch in banana plants. This pathogen belongs to the group of ascomycetes and is known to inhabit the leaf surfaces of Musa species, causing significant aesthetic and physiological damage to the host plant.
The host range is primarily limited to banana plants. The fungus colonizes the surface of the leaves, establishing itself as a foliar parasite. It is particularly problematic in tropical regions where environmental conditions favor the rapid spread of fungal spores across large plantations.
The primary symptom is the development of dark, soot-like fungal colonies on the leaf surface. These blotches may vary in size and distribution. As the infection progresses, it can affect the overall health of the leaf, leading to chlorosis, tissue necrosis, and eventually premature leaf drop.
