The Zopfiaceae family consists of ascomycetous fungi that often inhabit soil environments. While many species are known as saprotrophs, some representatives act as opportunistic pathogens that target weakened plant tissues, potentially causing localized infections and physiological disruptions in various agricultural crops.

These fungi typically cause root rots and tissue necrosis. The pathogen spreads through microscopic spores that persist in the soil and on crop residues, waiting for conditions such as excessive moisture or root stress to penetrate the host plant's tissues.

A wide range of crops, including cereals and vegetables, can be affected by these pathogens. The disease manifests by attacking the root system, which disrupts the transport of water and essential nutrients from the soil to the upper parts of the plant, leading to overall decline.
