Description
Autumn variety selected by Primorsky Fruit and Berry Experimental Station, seedling of Chinese crabapple from open pollination. Approved for all climatic zones of fruit cultivation in the Primorsky Krai.
Widely grown in industrial-farm, peasant households, as well as in collective and private gardening.
Large, vigorous tree with a broad, spreading crown. Thick, smooth, brown trunk.
Long, medium-thick branches, slightly drooping, greenish-brown. Leaves large, wrinkled with serrated edges, dark green, petioles with lanceolate stipules of medium length.
Fruits (see illustration) medium-sized (up to 120-140 g), round, slightly flattened-oval, symmetrical. Surface smooth. Main color green, slightly yellowing with slight dull blush upon ripening. Peduncle short, located at the central part of the fruit. Receptacle large, closed over a wide funnel-shaped subreceptacle tube.
Flesh fine-grained, tender, juicy, yellowish hue, sweet-tart with some excess acidity, which does not reduce taste quality. Ripe fruits emit a delicate, appealing aroma, which has contributed to the variety's popularity. Chemical composition of fruits: total sugars — 12.2%, titratable acids — 0.94%, ascorbic acid — 25.5 mg/100g, pectin substances — 14.7% on dry weight, tannins — up to 65%.
Autumn-ripening variety, but capable of storage in cooled conditions.
Partially self-fertile. Well pollinated by Antonovka and Rublevoye varieties.
Trees enter fruiting early, at 3-4 years. High yields, up to 39-50 kg/tree, at 7-8 years — 80-100 centners/ha. Winter hardiness very high, comparable to old Far Eastern varieties. Highly resistant to fungal diseases (moniliosis) and relatively resistant to the most damaging disease — bacterial canker.
Advantages of the variety: high ecological adaptability, high yield, high fruit marketability, suitability for fresh consumption and various processing methods; one of the most resistant varieties to winter damage, sunscald, and bacterial canker.
Disadvantages of the variety: uneven fruit ripening, fruit drop, short storage life.
The variety is used in breeding to obtain winter-hardy, bacterial canker-resistant varieties.
