Description
The Pinova apple variety, developed in the GDR
(Germany) in 1986 by crossing the varieties Clivia and Golden
Delicious.
Medium-sized tree with a broad-pyramidal, moderately dense crown, sufficiently cold-resistant, highly resistant to scab and powdery mildew.
Moderate susceptibility to bacterial burn (Faby R., 1994).
Blossoms in mid-late season. Diploid.
Good pollinated by pollen of varieties Elstar, Gala, Gloucester, Golden Delicious,
Ayrade, Melrose, Champion.
Enters fruiting early, on the second
year of growth in the orchard. Bears fruit annually and abundantly. Prone to excessive
fruit set and fruit overloading. Responds to thinning of fruit and
summer pruning by increasing fruit size and improving fruit color.
Fruits are medium-sized, single, round-conical, with a relatively narrow apex,
greenish-yellow, with a diffuse orange-red blush covering 60-70% of the surface.
Skin is thin but firm, smooth and glossy. Flesh is yellow, very firm, crisp, juicy, with
pleasant aroma and excellent slightly acidic-sweet flavor.
Harvesting maturity occurs at the end
of September - beginning of October. Mature fruits do not drop off. With careless
harvesting, they may develop finger marks, which reduces their marketability.
In the refrigerator, fruits keep for about 8 months without physiological disorders.
They retain juiciness, flesh consistency and wilt less than Golden
Delicious apples.
European gardeners call Pinova a
21st-century variety and predict a long life for it, since it surpasses
popular current varieties in disease resistance, early fruiting, and yield.
Belgian researchers (Visitor--Guide-Book, 1999) note that among 31 newly tested
varieties over the past years, Pinova stands out for its early fruiting and
intensive yield development in young trees. In trials, Pinova trees on M.9
with a planting scheme of 3.5 x 1.5 m produced yields of 32.2 kg/tree
with an average fruit weight of 172 grams during the second to fourth year of growth,
while the Ariva variety yielded only 20.2 kg/tree, and Santana - 12.9 kg/tree.
In Ukraine, Pinova has been tested very
recently. Initial results of collection studies show that in southern Polissia,
its fruits ripen at the end of September. Appearance and weight are typical for this
variety. In the refrigerator, they are preserved until May, without wilting, without
losing flavor or flesh consistency. Latest tasting scores - 4.6-4.9 points.
