Description
The Abalak spring barley variety is a mid-early and medium-height variety created through hybridization and subsequent individual selection from the hybrid population U-53-8515 x Sa 46925. The plants reach an average height of about 86.8 cm, which is slightly higher than the standard 'Ach', and are characterized by resistance to lodging. The growing season of the variety averages 71 days, allowing it to successfully develop in various climatic conditions, including the foothill Pre-taiga, Lesostep of Prichulymsky, Southern Forest Steppe, and Steppe of Foothills regions on ordinary and southern chernozems of Krasnoyarsk Krai, as well as in the Republic of Khakassia and Zabaykalsky Krai.
Abalak is distinguished by high grain yield, averaging 5.88 t/ha, with a maximum indicator up to 7.70 t/ha, which exceeds the yield of the standard 'Ach'. The mass of 1000 grains varies from 42 to 55 g, averaging about 47.3-48.9 g, indicating large grain size. The grain coefficient of the variety is quite high, amounting to about 39.4%. The technological properties of the grain are at the level of the standard, making the variety suitable for both forage and food use.
The variety has moderate drought resistance, especially to spring-summer drought, and moderate susceptibility to some diseases, such as loose smut and net form of loose smut, striped rust, and helminthosporiosis. However, it is highly susceptible to root rots, which requires attention in agronomic measures. Abalak is recommended for cultivation in various regions of Russia and has been included in the State Register of Breeding Achievements since 2013.
