Sebastian

Sebastian barley is a medium-maturing, two-row brewing barley of Danish origin, adapted for cultivation in various climatic zones of Ukraine, including steppes, forest-steppe, and marshlands. The growing period of the variety is 87-95 days, enabling a stable harvest throughout the season. Plants have a medium height of 59-70 cm, characterized by high bushiness and strong stems, providing resistance to lodging and breakage. The thousand-grain weight varies from 44 to 46.2 grams; the grain is large with low protein content — 10.2 to 11.5%, which is particularly important for brewing purposes.

The variety exhibits high drought and cold tolerance, tolerates early frosts well, and actively grows at the beginning of the vegetation period, forming a solid foundation for future yields. Sebastian shows good adaptability to various soils and responds positively to application of mineral and micro-fertilizers, including potassium humates, which enhances yield. The potential yield of the variety exceeds 100 centners per hectare, with average yields in farms ranging from 55 to 66.7 centners per hectare, and up to 7 centners per hectare on high-fertility soils.

The variety possesses natural resistance to major diseases such as powdery mildew, septoria, helminthosporium, and leaf spot, reducing fungicide load; however, it is recommended to conduct at least a minimum of two fungicide treatments for reliable protection. The seeding rate is 3.5-4.5 million seeds per hectare, equivalent to 180-200 kg/ha. Due to its characteristics and adaptability, Sebastian barley is a reliable choice for the brewing industry and farmers aiming for high-quality and high-yield harvests.
