Description
Spring barley BIOS 1® is a high-yielding grain crop variety designed for use in agronomic practice. This variety is distinguished by stable yields and high grain quality, making it in demand among agricultural producers. BIOS 1® belongs to the nutans group and is characterized by medium-length and density spikes, large grains with a 1000-grain weight of 45 to 54 grams and a grain bulk density of 713 g/l. Grain uniformity reaches 93%, and protein content varies from 11% to 15%, ensuring high-quality raw material for further use.
The variety exhibits high resistance to lodging and brittleness, which contributes to yield preservation under unfavorable weather conditions. Straw height ranges from 60 to 80 cm, and bushiness is high, positively affecting the overall productivity of the plant. BIOS 1® is a mid-ripening variety, maturing simultaneously with varieties such as Gona, Versk, and Sonet. It has moderate drought tolerance and high resistance to a range of diseases, including loose smut, covered smut, helminthosporium, and root rots, although it is weakly resistant to rust and powdery mildew. Thanks to its qualities, the variety is widely used in the brewing industry and is distinguished by the good taste of porridge.
In scientific research at Vyatskii GSXA, the BIOS 1® variety became the basis for creating a collection of mutants obtained using mutagenic exposure to urea and laser radiation. One of the mutants, 5-26, showed a significant increase in yield and early maturity, confirming the variety's potential for further breeding improvement. Thus, BIOS 1® is not only a valuable variety for agriculture but also serves as a base for innovative developments in the field of barley breeding.
