Description
The barley variety Dostoynyy is a six-row, semi-compact fodder variety with high yield potential reaching 99 centners per hectare, with actual yields of 59–63 centners per hectare. It is characterized by early maturity, ripening 5–7 days earlier than the variety Osnova, allowing effective use in various agroclimatic conditions. Plants reach a height of 100–105 cm, have a rectangular, loosely compacted ear 6–8 cm long with large, elongated-oval, yellow grains weighing 42–43 grams per 1000 kernels. The bushiness of the variety is well expressed with late autumn and early spring sowing.
Dostoynyy possesses high cold resistance (7 points) and drought resistance (7–8 points), making it particularly well-suited for cultivation in dry regions of Ukraine. The variety is resistant to lodging (7–8 points) and exhibits high resistance to diseases such as powdery mildew, black and blister rust (7–8 points), ensuring stable yields and reducing the need for intensive chemical protection. These qualities are inherited from the donor material SI 13664.
The wide application of the Dostoynyy variety is due to its versatility: the grain is used as animal feed, as well as in the food industry for producing pearl and barley grits, coffee substitutes, flour, in brewing, confectionery, and pharmaceutical industries. Potassium humate is recommended for use in combination with fungicides for cereal crops to increase yield. Due to its adaptability to various soils and climatic conditions, the Dostoynyy variety is a popular choice among Ukrainian farmers for sowing both winter and spring barley.
