Technical Profile of Winter Barley «Pokolinnia»

Developed by the Donetsk State Agricultural Research Station of NAAS, the «Pokolinnia» cultivar is a product of targeted breeding aimed at adaptability within the steppe and forest-steppe climatic zones of Ukraine. The primary engineering goal in the development of this variety was to create a optimal balance between high tillering capacity and structural stem resilience against lodging.

Key Morphological and Physiological Parameters

• Stem Architecture: The variety exhibits a strong standing ability. Its relatively short stature (85–95 cm) serves as a critical factor in intensive farming: when high rates of nitrogen fertilizers are applied, the plant does not succumb to lodging, thereby minimizing harvest losses.
• Grain Filling Efficiency: The ear is dense and cylindrical. The internal mechanisms of «Pokolinnia» are engineered to ensure efficient photosynthesis during grain filling, even under conditions of short-term moisture deficit. Medium-length awns promote high-quality pollination.
• Adaptation Mechanism: The genetic architecture is optimized for cold resistance (rated at 7–8 points in field and laboratory conditions). This allows the plant to survive low-temperature winter stress without critical tissue damage and ensures rapid vegetation recovery at the onset of spring temperatures.

In practice, the use of this variety is justified for farming operations aiming for yield stability in temperate continental climates. High tillering capacity allows for flexible seeding rates, potentially reducing seed costs while maintaining optimal harvest timing.
