Description
An Engineering Approach to Yield: "Kryks" Spring Barley
The Selection and Genetics Institute has introduced a variety focused on risk mitigation in intensive farming environments. "Kryks" is a two-row spring barley with an architectural design aimed at realizing yield potential while maintaining strict control over pathogens.
Phytosanitary Barrier
The key feature of this germplasm is its genetically encoded tolerance to a wide spectrum of foliar infections. The agronomic value of this variety is defined by its resistance to:
- Helminthosporium and brown spot;
- Rhynchosporium and Mycosphaerella leaf blotch;
- Rust (including yellow rust);
- Powdery mildew.
Particular attention has been paid to net blotch resistance. For an agronomist, this translates to a reduced fungicidal load during early vegetative stages and a lower probability of epiphytotics during seasons with high humidity.
Morphology and Grain Quality
The plant’s technical parameters are balanced for efficient resource utilization. A stem height of 50–60 cm ensures strong lodging resistance, which is critical when applying intensive fertilizer programs. The two-row ear type, combined with a thousand-kernel weight (TKW) of 44–46 grams, consistently produces plump, high-quality grain.
The biochemical profile of the variety includes a crude protein content (nitrogenous substances) in the dry matter at 12%. This makes "Kryks" not only a promising feed solution but also a high-quality raw material for the brewing industry, where protein standards are a decisive factor in pricing. The plant’s compact habit promotes uniform maturation, which facilitates harvesting operations and minimizes threshing losses.
