Description
KWS HOBBY is a medium-maturing spring barley bred by German breeders from the company KWS SAAT SE, intended for the production of light malt types. The variety's vegetation period is from 76 to 88 days, which ensures optimal maturation timing. Plants are characterized by short height — 52-58 cm, which contributes to lodging resistance and facilitates harvest. High tillering intensity and large grain size with a 1000-grain mass in the range of 47-55 g ensure high quality raw materials for malt.
The variety is recommended for cultivation in the Central Black Soil Region, in particular in the Voronezh and Tambov regions, where it demonstrates an average yield of about 56.9 c/ha and a maximum of up to 120 c/ha. KWS HOBBY is distinguished by high grain nature and size of more than 2.5 mm, which minimizes losses during sorting. It has good resistance to root rot and stripe rust, as well as high germination energy, which contributes to uniform and rapid emergence.
For the variety's agronomy, an optimal sowing depth of 3-5 cm at a sowing rate of 4-5 million/ha is suitable. Protein content in the grain is 10-11%, which, together with high extractability and low malt viscosity, ensures a high final fermentation degree. Diastatic power and FAN enzyme levels are at medium or low levels, which corresponds to the requirements for light malt varieties. Thanks to these characteristics, KWS HOBBY is an excellent choice for the brewing industry, ensuring stable quality and high yield.
