Description
Paustian is a mid-early variety of spring barley intended for brewing and forage use. Plants of this variety are of medium height, about 59 cm, with good stiffness and resistance to lodging and drooping of the ear. The vegetative period is 75-90 days, which allows the variety to ripen simultaneously with the variety Velus and slightly earlier or later than other standard varieties. Paustian is distinguished by high adaptability, resistance to cold stress factors at early development stages, as well as drought resistance at the level of standard varieties. The grain is large, with the mass of 1000 grains varying from 45 to 54 grams, with good uniformity and high mass weight.
The variety is characterized by resistance to a number of diseases, including powdery mildew, rhynchosporium, brown rust, and net blotch, which ensures yield stability. At the same time, it is moderately resistant to loose smut and dark brown spot, and susceptible to powdery smut. For seed protection, fungicide with insecticide treatment and one fungicide treatment before heading is recommended. Paustian is well suited for cultivation on soils of medium quality with the application of medium-intensity and intensive technologies, demonstrating high resistance to soil acidification.
To achieve maximum yield and grain quality, it is recommended to observe seeding rates: 340–360 viable seeds per square meter for early sowing and 360–420 for late sowing. Fertilizer application depends on the direction of use: in brewing technology, nitrogen fertilizers are limited to 40 kg/ha, while when growing for forage with high protein content, nitrogen doses are increased to 100–120 kg/ha. Average yield in the Central Black Earth region is about 54.4 c/ha, while in the Kursk region it reaches 75.4 c/ha with a maximum indicator of 109.8 c/ha, which confirms the high productivity and stability of the variety.
