Description
SATURN is a winter barley variety developed in 2023 for grain and fodder use. It belongs to medium-ripening varieties with a vegetative period ranging from 210 to 241 days. The plant is multi-rowed, medium-height, with lodging resistance and an intermediate bush type. The mass of 1000 grains varies from 45 to 53 grams, while grain natural density is 697 g/l, indicating high harvest quality. The variety features large grains with a non-hairy ventral furrow and a pyramidal-cylindrical ear of medium density with long barbed awns.
SATURN is recommended for cultivation in the North Caucasus region of Russia, including Krasnodar and Stavropol Krais. It possesses average cold hardiness corresponding to regional standards and high field resistance to diseases such as dwarf bunt and powdery mildew. Protein content in the grain reaches 11.2%, making it valuable for fodder purposes. Average yield in the region is about 6.2 t/ha, while maximum yield indicators reach 12.1 t/ha, significantly exceeding standards for similar varieties.
Variety features include the presence of pubescence on sheaths of lower leaves, absence of anthocyanin pigmentation on flag leaf ears, and medium-strong waxy bloom on sheaths. The ear has a weak waxy bloom, and the first segment of the ear rachis is short and practically does not bend. These morphological traits contribute to plant resistance to adverse conditions and ensure harvest stability. The SATURN variety is a promising choice for agrarians seeking high-quality grain with good yield in the North Caucasus region.
