Description
Suzdalec is a mid-season spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) variety developed through joint breeding by several research institutes in the Central non-Black Earth region of Russia. The variety has a vegetative period of 87 to 105 days, allowing it to be successfully cultivated in various regions, including the Northwestern, Central, and Central Black Earth regions. The variety is distinguished by its medium height and adaptability to different soil types, making it versatile for agricultural production. One of the key features of the Suzdalec variety is its high resistance to powdery mildew and ergot, as well as comparative resistance to other leaf and stem diseases. However, the variety is susceptible to stem rust, helminthosporiosis, and blotch diseases. Thanks to rapid growth after germination, it has good competitiveness against weeds and high drought resistance, which contributes to stable yields even under unfavorable conditions. The Suzdalec variety has high yields and can reach up to 6.5 tons per hectare, corresponding to the maximum figure of 72 centners per hectare in the Central region. The grain is characterized by high extractability (80-82%), low hulling (about 9%), excellent germination and size (95% and above). Protein content varies from 9 to 13%, and the mass of 1000 grains is 42-52 grams. Thanks to these qualities, the variety is widely used for brewing purposes and other high-quality directions.
