Description
Zernogradsky 2 is a tall species of sand esparcet (Onobrýchis arenária), created through biotypic selection at the FGBNU «Donskoy Agricultural Research Center». The plant reaches a height of 95–110 cm, has a semi-erect to erect bush with a ribbed stem of light green color. Leaves are lanceolate, dark green, without a waxy coating; leaflets are triangularly pointed, ranging from colorless to brown. The inflorescence is a cylindrical, loose, pink raceme; seeds are of medium size, bean-shaped, and brown.
The variety is distinguished by its high yield potential: during the period 2015–2019, the average yield of green mass was 45 t/ha, hay was 10.7 t/ha, and seeds ranged from 0.4 to 1.5 t/ha. In trials at the Ypatovsky GSV and Stavropol State Station, dry matter yield reached 4.3–5.5 t/ha, which is 7–10% higher than the standard Northern Caucasus two-cut variety.
Feed quality also exceeds the standard: hay contains approximately 1.9% more crude protein and 2.2% less fiber. The variety is resistant to diseases (ascochitis, root rot), seed pests, and has high drought resistance. It is undemanding regarding soils, grows well in sandy and slope soils, and is suitable for field seeding and sward establishment.
Zernogradsky 2 has average winter hardiness and persists in crops for about five years. Thanks to its high yield, feed quality, and resistance to unfavorable conditions, it is a reliable choice for farmers working in the North Caucasian and Lower Volga regions.
