Tares «Penza 1» – compact or semi-spreading bush, 110-120 cm tall, with upright stems of medium thickness and without tassel. Bushiness is moderate (10-13 stems), leaf abundance up to 40-44 %. Inflorescences are spreading, single-bearded panicles 25-30 cm long with dark purple seeds of medium size.
Penza 1 belongs to the forest-steppe ecological group and is characterized by high winter hardiness, drought resistance, and weak susceptibility to pests. The vegetation period for hay is 39-42 days, and to full seed maturity – 90-91 days. Green mass yield reaches 25-30 t/ha, hay harvest – 6.5 t/ha, and seeds – 0.3-0.4 t/ha. With nitrogen fertilization, crude protein content in dry feed matter can reach 16-18 %, while fiber does not exceed 24-26 %.
The variety is recommended for multi-year haymaking and pasture use, as well as in farmyard crop rotations. It is well suited both pure and in mixtures with legume grasses (Oxytropis lambertii, alfalfa, esparcet). Tares «Penza 1» is grazed by all types of livestock and possesses high technological suitability for production. Recommended for cultivation in the Central Volga region.
