Description
Pea (Pisum sativum) variety 'Varyag' is a medium-maturing, branchless variety with a vegetative period of 65 to 82 days. Plants reach a height of 65 to 97 cm and are characterized by having 12-15 internodes up to the first inflorescence. Flowers are white, pods are straight with blunt tips, containing 4 to 7 seeds. Seeds are oval, smooth, with yellow cotyledons and a closed hilum; the mass of 1000 seeds ranges from 215 to 260 grams. The maximum number of flowers per node is two, stipules are well developed, and mottling density is medium to high.
The variety is distinguished by high resistance to shattering and medium drought tolerance, which corresponds to regional standards. Regarding resistance to lodging, 'Varyag' outperforms the Talovec 55 variety by two points per year of trait manifestation. Yield of the variety varies depending on growing conditions: average yield is about 16.4 centners/ha, while maximum yield reached 40 centners/ha in the Kemerovo region. In production trials in the Altai region, the variety showed an exceedance of yield over the standard Talovec 55 by 4.2 centners/ha during direct combine harvesting.
Protein content in the grain is high — up to 30%, which makes the variety attractive for use in food and feed industries. However, the variety has strong susceptibility to ascochitis, which requires attention when choosing growing conditions and implementing protective measures. 'Varyag' is recommended for cultivation in the West Siberian and East Siberian regions, as well as in the Altai region, which confirms its adaptation to the climatic conditions of these territories.
