Description
Breeding Breakthrough from NULES: Spring Rapeseed "Sirius"
In the face of climate instability and rising quality standards for oilseed raw materials, the spring rapeseed variety "Sirius" from the breeders of NULES of Ukraine (National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine) occupies a niche as high-performance material for intensive agricultural technologies. It is a simple linear hybrid variety designed to achieve stable yields when maintaining a sowing density of 600,000–700,000 plants per hectare.
Agronomic Performance and Potential
The key advantage of "Sirius" is the balance between yield and grain quality characteristics. With proper agronomic practices, the potential yield reaches 60–70 c/ha, putting it on par with top imported analogs. The technological properties of the seeds meet modern processing standards:
- Oil content: 45–50%, ensuring high profitability upon sale.
- Glucosinolate content: 9–10 µmol (meeting "00"-type requirements).
- Low erucic acid content, which is crucial for the food and feed industries.
The plant height is moderate (150–160 cm), which facilitates mechanized harvesting and reduces grain loss during combining.
Pathogen Resistance and Protection
This NULES development demonstrates high adaptability to aggressive phytosanitary conditions. Genetic resistance to bacteriosis and downy mildew reduces the crop's dependence on fungicide treatments. The variety shows pronounced immunity against a complex of dangerous rapeseed diseases, including:
- Alternaria leaf spot and Phoma stem canker;
- Sclerotinia and root rots;
- Black leg;
- Corn and sorghum downy mildew.
"Sirius" is the choice of agronomists who prioritize domestic breeding capable of competing with global brands in oil content and disease resistance under field conditions.

Type of Rape
Type of Rape
Winter rape is a long-day plant, characterized by weak winter hardiness. It may be damaged at temperatures of -8 to -10°C, so it is most commonly grown in regions with mild winters. The most favorable temperature for growth and development of rape is 18-24°C. It requires moisture... |

Glucosinolate Content, mmol
The second criterion for evaluating modern rapeseed varieties is the content of glucosinolates in dry fat-free matter, expressed in various units, for example, %, mg/g, μmol/g. Different countries have different standards for glucosinolate content, as it has been established that... |

Erucic Acid Content
Erucic Acid Content
The amount of erucic acid is assessed as a percentage of the total fatty acid content in seed oil. Initially, rapeseed varieties containing less than 5% erucic acid in their seeds were named low-erucic or "0" varieties. Later, this threshold was changed, and "0" varieties now ref... |
