Practical insights on growing the 'Vidbirna' raspberry

When we established a test plot of 'Vidbirna' raspberries bred by the NULES of Ukraine (НУБіП), our goal was to achieve consistent commercial yields. This variety proved to be a reliable and predictable performer. Unlike many imported, high-maintenance cultivars, 'Vidbirna' requires less intensive agronomic intervention while consistently producing the claimed 4–6 kg per bush.

Agronomy and yield reality

Managing this variety is straightforward. The bush has a compact growth habit, which is crucial for efficient harvesting and row maintenance. With proper irrigation and the standard feeding schedule recommended by the NULES of Ukraine, the plant responds with vigorous fruiting branch development. The 4–6 kg yield is not just a marketing figure; it is a realistic outcome provided that planting density is optimal. The key is timely sanitary pruning, as the variety tends to thicken, requiring the removal of excess shoots to ensure airflow and minimize disease risks.

Harvesting and processing efficiency

The primary advantage for market-oriented growers is the berry's technical quality. 'Vidbirna' is excellent for processing. Its structural firmness allows it to withstand transport without turning into pulp, a common issue with softer varieties. For freezing, it is one of the best options in the Ukrainian breeding segment. After thawing, the berry retains its shape and does not leak, which is highly appreciated by wholesale buyers and food processing facilities.

Management tips for growers

• Irrigation: The variety is highly responsive to drip irrigation. Without it, yields can drop significantly.
• Pruning: Be diligent with your pruners; excess replacement shoots draw nutrients away from the fruit.
• Freezing: Harvest at the technical maturity stage to ensure the best commercial appearance in the final package.
