Description
Sweet Charlie strawberry is an early garden strawberry variety, developed by American breeders at the University of California. In the climatic conditions of southern Ukraine, fruiting begins as early as the second decade of May. Medium- to tall-sized plants actively produce numerous runners, which facilitates effective propagation of the variety. Plants prefer sunny locations and require soil preparation before planting. Seedlings can be planted in spring or autumn, and in summer — as seedlings in trays. The variety has high frost resistance, so winter protection is usually unnecessary.
Sweet Charlie berries have an elongated shape with clearly defined indentations, where the seeds are located. The fruits are large, weighing 20-30 grams, with shiny skin and firm, juicy flesh. The berries have a very sweet taste with minimal acidity, making them especially attractive. At the beginning of the season, the berries are large, but by the end of fruiting they slightly decrease in size, then a new wave of large fruits appears. The variety is known for its excellent transportability — berries do not get damaged and retain their market appearance during transport.
Sweet Charlie is resistant to major strawberry diseases, including the dangerous fungal anthracnose, and also tolerates drought and water deficiency. Due to its high concentration of vitamin C and sugars in the berries, this variety is recognized as one of the most flavorful and aromatic among strawberries. It is suitable for both hobby and commercial cultivation, which is confirmed by its status as a standard variety at American experimental stations.
