Description
Pelton – annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam. var. westerwoldicum Wittm.), known for its high resistance to lodging and intensive growth, making it an excellent choice for fodder purposes. The plant is characterized by a medium leaf length of up to 40 cm and a width of about 0.8 cm, as well as complex spikes up to 30 cm long with small spikelets up to 1.1 cm. The plant height at flowering ranges from 70 to 95 cm.
Pelton demonstrates excellent yield both as green mass and dry matter. In the first cut, the green mass yield reaches 55 c/ha, and in the second – 100 c/ha; the corresponding dry matter yield is 27.6 and 28.6 c/ha. The period from germination to economic maturity of the first cut is 54 days, and the second is 46 days. No lodging of the grass canopy is observed throughout the entire vegetation period.
The variety is distinguished by drought resistance and can grow on heavy soils, which ensures its wide applicability in various agronomic conditions. Pelton is suitable for hay as well as green mass, and can also be used in grass mixtures, providing high fodder characteristics and stable productivity.
