Description
Sea buckthorn variety "Giant" is a medium-late shrub reaching up to 3–3.5 m in height and 2–2.5 m in width, which can be grown as a tree or a compact bush. Saplings are usually about two years old and reach a height of approximately 1.2 m. The plant is characterized by good frost resistance (up to –30 °C) and drought tolerance, so it does not require frequent watering and prefers sunny areas with light, loamy soil.
The key feature of the variety is the large fruit size: berries reach 0.7–1.2 g, have an elongated shape and an orange–orange hue. The flesh is dense, juicy, and sweet-and-sour with a pineapple aroma, making them suitable for fresh consumption, freezing, as well as for producing juice, oil, and wine. Fruiting begins in mid-September, with a yield of 18–20 kg per bush after 6–7 years.
The variety is self-sterile, but for a higher yield, the presence of a pollinator, such as the "Adam" variety, is recommended. The root system develops to a depth of about 40 cm, so the plant does not need frequent watering, although moderate moisture promotes better growth. When planting, it is important to choose sunny locations and avoid stagnant groundwater to ensure optimal conditions for fruit development.
