Description

Verticillium wilt is a serious vascular disease caused by soil-borne fungi, primarily Verticillium dahliae and Verticillium albo-atrum. These pathogens enter the plant through the root system and colonize the xylem, where they release toxins and physically obstruct the movement of water and nutrients, eventually causing the plant to wilt and die.

The host range for this disease is exceptionally broad, encompassing hundreds of plant species. Notable examples of vulnerable crops include peanuts, fodder beet, winter rapeseed, turnips, Browallia speciosa, Slipper Flower, hemp, and sweet peppers. The fungus survives in the soil for long periods as dormant microsclerotia, which can be triggered to germinate by the presence of susceptible roots.

Symptoms often begin with chlorosis or yellowing along the margins of leaves or between veins, which may progress to necrosis. A classic diagnostic feature is the vascular discoloration (browning) visible within the stem when cut. As the disease advances, leaves drop prematurely, and the entire plant may collapse due to the inability to maintain internal water pressure.

The development of the disease is heavily influenced by soil temperature and moisture. While the fungus can persist in dry conditions, it thrives in moderate temperatures, typically between 20°C and 25°C. Once the mycelium infects the roots, it travels upwards through the plant's vascular tissue, making systemic spread rapid and difficult to reverse once the symptoms become clearly visible.

Management of Verticillium wilt is challenging because the fungus persists in the soil for many years. Prevention is key, involving the use of certified pathogen-free seeds, long crop rotation cycles, and rigorous sanitation practices to remove infected plant debris. In high-value systems, soil solarization or the application of specific fungicides can help reduce the pathogen population in the soil prior to planting.
