Description
The sugar sorghum variety Krepysh was developed at the South-Eastern Scientific Research Institute of Agriculture (NIISKh) and is intended for cultivation in Region 8. It is distinguished by a mid-early maturity period and high yield in both grain and fodder mass. Plants of this variety exhibit accelerated initial growth rates, high drought tolerance, and heat-loving characteristics. The stems are well-leafed, retain succulence until the end of the vegetation period, and are characterized by high sugar content, making Krepysh valuable for sugar and fodder production.
Botanical features of the variety include a loose, erect panicle measuring 36-46 cm in length with brown coloring and a purple tint. The leaves are green, linear, 35-42 cm in length, and hairless. The seeds are light brown and brown, naked, easily threshed, with a starchy white endosperm. The ears are egg-shaped, awnless, with a variegated scale coloration ranging from light brown to dark brown with a purple tint. A high proportion of grain-type grain in the yield and a short, uniform grass stand facilitate harvesting and improve fodder quality due to high leaf content.
Cultivation technology for the Krepysh variety requires a field free of weeds, as sorghum grows slowly in the initial period and can be suppressed by weeds. Soil treatment includes autumn plowing or a rotary tillage system with stubble retention in arid regions. Spring harrowing and cultivation are carried out before sowing. To improve silage quality, growing in mixed stands with corn and other silage crops is recommended. Harvesting is conducted at the grain wax maturity stage for silage and from the flag leaf phase until panicle emergence for green fodder. High yield and stability make the Krepysh variety economically efficient and competitive in its cultivation zones.
