Description
Sorghum «Quartz» – an early-maturing grain sorghum variety grown in Ukraine and intended for food use. The plant belongs to the proso-grass group, characterized by high drought resistance and soil adaptability, making it one of the most profitable crops under resource-limited conditions. Yield reaches up to 100 centners per hectare, with grain containing about 13% protein and 75% starch, ensuring high nutritional value of the product.
Porridge made from «Quartz» tastes like young corn and is rich in amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids. Grain can be used for producing flour, grits, porridge, and flatbreads; during baking, it is often mixed with wheat flour due to lack of stickiness. Sorghum starch is used in the food, textile, paper, and medical industries.
Green plant biomass is suitable as feed for domestic animals, however it requires thermal treatment (drying or silage) due to the presence of cyanogenic acid. Sorghum «Quartz» is grown in late spring at temperatures of +10–12 °C, with a sowing depth of 4 cm and row spacing of 35–40 cm. High germination rate and disease resistance allow minimizing agricultural technology costs, while easy care makes it an attractive choice for farmers seeking to increase grain production efficiency.
