Description
Gesina sugar beet hybrid is a medium-maturing diploid variety intended for high yields with high sugar content in roots. Plants are characterized by single-stemmed growth, strong early growth, and uniformity in growth rate and habit. Sugar content in roots reaches 17–18%, and yield varies from 45 to 60 tons per hectare. Gesina exhibits high cold and drought resistance, but especially requires moisture during seed germination and root formation. Optimal growing conditions include soil with pH 6.5–7.5; the crop poorly tolerates high acidity and positively responds to liming. Sowing depth is 6–7 cm after soil warming to 6–8°C. Recommended plant density before harvest is 85–100 thousand per hectare, achieved by sowing 1.2–1.8 seeding units per hectare, where one unit contains 100,000 seeds. Gesina is well-suited for cultivation in all sugar beet-growing regions and shows high initial growth energy, promoting optimal plant density. Root heads are typically positioned above ground level, and the crop demonstrates good suitability for mechanical harvesting, with optimal harvest time in October. The crop has moderate soil fertility requirements and develops well even on moderately saline soils with proper care. Gesina prefers semi-rotted fertilizers, whereas fresh manure may reduce root quality. Water demand increases as plants grow, but excessive moisture before harvest leads to root damage and reduced sugar content. Root storability and transportability are good, ensuring high cultivation efficiency, especially with winter sowing.
