A primary objective in the design of VA 820 was to mitigate risks from major sunflower pathogens. The hybrid’s genotype provides reliable resistance to the most common threats:

• Downy Mildew (Peronospora): effective suppression during early development.
• Phomopsis and Phoma: structural stem integrity that prevents lodging and tissue degradation.
• White and Gray Rots: high tolerance to head infection, crucial for harvest quality in humid climates.

Crop Protection: Clearfield Compatibility

The integration of the 'Euro-Lightning' (Clearfield) herbicide technology into the VA 820 genetic profile is a game-changer for field management. By allowing the use of imidazolinone-based herbicides on standing crops, growers can eliminate a broad spectrum of grass and broadleaf weeds, including broomrape. This eliminates the uncertainty associated with soil-applied herbicides that depend on moisture levels.

Performance Indicators

With a vegetation period of 100–110 days, this hybrid is classified as medium-early, allowing for an efficient harvest window. The oil content, ranging between 50% and 55%, reflects the advanced breeding efforts of the VNIIMK, ensuring high profitability when processing at the industrial level.
