Description
Timothy Aldebaran is a perennial upright grass of the spring type, growing in the form of loose spikelets up to 20 cm long. Stem height ranges from 90 to 150 cm, with large, well-leafed leaves that ensure high hay yield.
The variety is distinguished by its cold hardiness and requirements for soil moisture and fertility: optimal growth occurs on moderately moist soils with a pH of 5.5–8.0. It does not tolerate dry sandy, podzolic, and acidic soils, as well as excess moisture. Maximum development is achieved within the second year after sowing.
Aldebaran is characterized by high nutritional value: the hay is rich in carotene and vitamin C, making it attractive for all types of livestock. Hay yield ranges from 3 to 8 tons/hectare, while green mass yield ranges from 24 to 35 tons/hectare. The plant is well grazed but cannot withstand intensive grazing for more than 4–5 cycles. To achieve maximum results, irrigation and nitrogen fertilizers are recommended. The sowing rate in pure form is 10–12 kg/hectare, on hayfields – 6–8 kg/hectare, and on pastures – 2–4 kg/hectare.
