Description
Garne is an autumn-sown triticale variety developed by the Institute of Plant Physiology named after V.Ya. Yuryev of NAAN and registered in 2004. It is intended for cultivation in forest-steppe and Polissia zones of Ukraine. The variety belongs to the luteus group and is characterized by medium-late maturity. Plants reach a height of 90 to 140 cm, have white, spindle-shaped, and dense spikes 9–12 cm long with short, saw-toothed awns. The grain is red, large, and elongated, with a 1000-grain weight of 55–60 g. Garne exhibits high winter hardiness (8.0–8.5 points), drought resistance, lodging resistance, and resistance to leaf and stem diseases. The potential grain yield exceeds 10 t/ha, and green mass yield reaches up to 60 t/ha. The quality of grain and green mass is high: protein content in grain reaches 13.8%, starch — 67%. Moreover, the variety features stable gluten quality at the level of 24–28%. The alcohol yield from 1 ton of press cake is 458 liters. For sowing, the recommended seeding rate is 2.5–4.5 million germinating seeds per hectare, depending on sowing dates and preceding crops. Optimal sowing dates are from September 1 to 15. Garne is well-suited for cultivation following occupied fallow lands, perennial grasses, and corn for silage. Due to its high adaptability and resistance to adverse conditions, this variety is a reliable choice for farmers aiming to achieve stable and high yields in various agroclimatic zones of Ukraine.
