Description
The "Pescansky" hazelnut variety is one of the best representatives of Moldavian breeding, possessing high yield and an excellent kernel recovery rate of about 65%. The tree is of medium height with a spreading, spherical crown and grows in industrial plantations. The bark is uniform without large cracks, and branches diverge at almost a right angle from the trunk, which facilitates fruit harvesting and makes the variety suitable for mechanized collection.
The nuts of this hazelnut are large, thin-shelled, with a creamy kernel that easily separates from the shell. Kernel completion reaches 85%, and kernel recovery exceeds 69%. The mass of one nut is 15–16 grams, and the thin yellow shell does not damage the kernel during mechanical extraction. Due to its drought and frost resistance (withstanding temperatures down to -30 °C), the "Pescansky" variety is suitable for growing in various climatic conditions.
The tree begins fruiting at 4–5 years old, and harvest begins in the second half of September and continues until October. Flowering is protogynic, starting in May, which allows it to avoid early spring frosts. The variety is characterized by good endurance to pests and diseases, above-average resistance to marsoniosis, and high market value due to its excellent taste and dessert properties of the nuts.
