Candidatus Phytoplasma refers to a genus of specialized prokaryotic organisms belonging to the class Mollicutes. These pathogens lack a rigid cell wall, making them unique and distinct from traditional bacteria. They are obligate parasites that reside and replicate within the phloem sieve tubes of host plants, significantly interfering with nutrient translocation.
These organisms are responsible for a wide range of diseases known collectively as "yellows." Significant economic damage is caused by diseases such as potato stolbur, grapevine yellows, and apple proliferation. They infect a vast array of agricultural, horticultural, and ornamental plants, often leading to severe stunting, leaf chlorosis, and total crop failure.
The biology of phytoplasmas is intimately linked to their insect vectors, primarily leafhoppers, planthoppers, and psyllids. Once an insect acquires the phytoplasma by feeding on an infected plant, the pathogen multiplies within the vector. The insect remains infectious for its entire lifespan, transmitting the disease to healthy plants during subsequent feeding sessions.
Epidemic spread is driven by the population dynamics of these insect vectors, which are heavily influenced by environmental factors such as temperature and humidity. Warm, dry weather conditions promote the multiplication and migration of vectors, leading to increased disease incidence. Pathogenic effects include malformed growth, proliferation of shoots, and reduced reproductive viability.
