Description
Phytoplasmas are specialized bacteria lacking a cell wall, belonging to the class Mollicutes. These obligate parasites reside specifically within the phloem tissues of host plants. Due to their inability to be cultured on standard laboratory media, their taxonomy is primarily based on molecular markers, specifically the 16S rRNA gene sequences, classifying them into distinct phylogenetic groups.
These pathogens are responsible for various systemic plant diseases, which significantly impact agricultural productivity worldwide. Major diseases include aster yellows, grapevine yellows, potato purple top wilt, and witches' broom symptoms on woody plants. A wide array of crops, including vegetables, fruits, and ornamental plants, are susceptible to these infections.
The life cycle of a phytoplasma is dependent on sap-sucking insect vectors, most notably leafhoppers, planthoppers, and psyllids. When an insect feeds on an infected plant, it ingests the phytoplasmas. After a latent period during which the pathogen multiplies within the vector, the insect becomes capable of transmitting the infection to healthy plants throughout its lifespan.
Development and spread are heavily influenced by the environment and insect population dynamics. High temperatures and dry conditions favor the proliferation of vectors, leading to rapid disease outbreaks. Effective spread is further facilitated by the presence of perennial weed reservoirs, which maintain the pathogen in the field environment during the winter or between crop cycles.
Phytoplasmas cause significant economic damage by disrupting plant metabolic pathways, leading to symptoms like leaf chlorosis, stunted growth, flower virescence, and phyllody. Since there are no chemical cures for plants once infected, control strategies focus on prevention:
- using certified disease-free planting material;
- systematic management of weeds that harbor the pathogen;
- application of insecticides to control insect vectors;
- utilization of resistant cultivars where available.
