Phytoplasmas are specialized, cell wall-less bacteria that belong to the class Mollicutes. As obligate parasites, they live exclusively within the phloem tissues of vascular plants and the bodies of their insect vectors. Lacking a rigid cell wall, these organisms exhibit a flexible morphology, which enables them to move efficiently through the sieve tubes of their host plants.

These pathogens cause various diseases collectively known as phytoplasmosis. Significant examples include potato purple top wilt, strawberry green petal, grapevine yellows, and witches' broom in woody plants. They affect a wide array of crops, including vegetables, fruits, and ornamentals, often leading to total crop failure and severe economic losses in the agricultural sector.

The life cycle of phytoplasmas is inextricably linked to insect vectors, primarily leafhoppers, planthoppers, and psyllids. An insect acquires the pathogen by feeding on the phloem sap of an infected plant. After a latent period within the insect's body, the vector becomes capable of transmitting the phytoplasma to healthy plants, remaining infectious for the rest of its life.

The spread and incidence of phytoplasmas are heavily dependent on the population dynamics of their vectors and local environmental conditions. Hot, dry weather often favors the proliferation of these insects, leading to significant outbreaks. Long-distance dispersal occurs predominantly through the trade and movement of infected nursery stock or propagation materials.

Phytoplasmas cause profound physiological changes, including leaf yellowing, stunting, floral malformations, and sterility. Integrated management strategies include:

  • Utilizing certified disease-free propagation materials.
  • Aggressive management of insect vector populations using appropriate insecticides.
  • Control of weeds that serve as alternative reservoirs for the pathogen.
  • Implementation of crop rotation and spatial isolation.
  • Deployment of resistant or tolerant crop varieties.
