Description
Systematic position and type of pathogen. Criconemella axesta belongs to the phylum Nematoda, class Chromadorea, order Rhabditida, and family Criconematidae. It is an ectoparasitic ring nematode that leads a sedentary lifestyle, feeding on the contents of plant root cells. This phytoparasite is characterized by a prominent transverse annulation of the cuticle, which is a hallmark feature of the family members.
Diseases and host crops. This pest causes suppression of the root system, leading to stunted growth, chlorosis, and reduced agricultural yield. Criconemella axesta is commonly found in the rhizosphere of woody fruit crops, berries, and several vegetable species. Damage to the roots caused by these nematodes often facilitates the entry of secondary fungal and bacterial infections into the plant vascular system.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of an egg stage, four larval stages, and an adult. The nematode possesses a specialized piercing-sucking stylet used to penetrate the root epidermis. Most of its life, the individual remains attached to a specific site on the root, slowly absorbing nutrients, which depletes the plant and limits its ability to effectively uptake water and essential soil minerals.
Conditions for development and spread. The optimal environment for Criconemella axesta development is light sandy or loamy soil with good aeration. The nematode is highly sensitive to soil moisture levels and temperature fluctuations. Major pathways for spread include the movement of infested soil via agricultural equipment, irrigation water, and the transfer of contaminated nursery stock with untreated root systems.
Damage and control measures. The damage manifests as gradual wilting of plants, a reduction in the density of root hairs, and significant yield loss. Control strategies include:
- Using certified nematode-free planting material.
- Implementing crop rotation with non-host or antagonistic crops (e.g., mustard or marigolds).
- Application of specialized nematicides in accordance with local regulations.
- Maintaining optimal soil fertility to enhance natural plant resistance against parasites.
- Regular phytosanitary monitoring of the root zone during the growing season.
