Description

The ring nematode Criconemella xenoplax (recently reclassified as Mesocriconema xenoplax) is a significant ectoparasitic pest in agriculture. These microscopic roundworms attach themselves to the surface of plant roots, piercing the tissue with their needle-like stylets. By feeding on the cellular contents, they severely damage the root cortex, limiting the plant's ability to uptake water and essential minerals.

This nematode has a diverse host range, impacting various economically important crops. It is particularly devastating to stone fruits, including apricot, common cherry, and sour cherry (duke cherry). Furthermore, it causes yield losses in agronomic and ornamental crops such as peanuts, oats, watermelons, carnations, and roses, making it a universal threat in temperate and warm climates.

Symptoms of infestation are often characterized by general plant decline, which includes stunted growth, chlorosis, and reduced vigor. Affected root systems often show necrotic lesions and restricted branching, which impairs the plant's ability to withstand drought or frost. In fruit orchards, this nematode is frequently associated with the "peach tree short life" syndrome, where weakened trees become susceptible to bacterial cankers.

Development and spread of Criconemella xenoplax are most pronounced in light, sandy soils where moisture levels are maintained. The nematodes spread rapidly through human activities: contaminated soil particles on farm equipment, irrigation water, and infected nursery stock. Because they are highly resilient, they can persist in the soil for years even in the absence of a preferred host plant.

Control strategies for the ring nematode focus on prevention and population reduction. Key measures include:

  • Utilization of nematode-free nursery stock to prevent initial infestation.
  • Pre-plant soil fumigation for high-value orchard crops.
  • Crop rotation with non-host plants to starve the nematode population.
  • Implementation of cover crops that release natural nematicidal compounds.
  • Maintaining robust soil fertility to help plants tolerate nematode-related stress.
