Hoplolaimus galeatus, commonly known as the lance nematode, is a significant plant-parasitic nematode that represents a major threat to agricultural productivity. As an obligate endoparasite, it utilizes its large, robust stylet to penetrate the root cortex, causing direct mechanical injury and cellular destruction as it feeds on the vascular tissues of the plant.

This nematode has an extensive host range, frequently attacking essential crops such as maize, soybeans, cotton, and various perennial woody plants. The primary damage is characterized by severe root lesioning, stunted plant growth, leaf chlorosis, and significantly reduced yield. In many cases, the physical damage induced by Hoplolaimus galeatus facilitates the entry of soil-borne pathogens, leading to complex disease syndromes.

The life cycle of the lance nematode includes eggs, four juvenile stages, and the adult phase. It exhibits both ectoparasitic and endoparasitic feeding habits, meaning it can migrate within the soil profile and invade the inner tissues of the root. This flexibility allows the nematode to persist in the field even under changing environmental conditions, making it a highly resilient pest.

Optimal development for Hoplolaimus galeatus typically occurs in well-aerated, sandy or sandy-loam soils. It spreads primarily through the movement of infested soil, farm equipment, and irrigation water. Because these nematodes are often persistent, they can build up large populations over multiple growing seasons, especially in fields where susceptible host crops are cultivated repeatedly.

Effective control requires an integrated pest management approach. Strategies include the use of crop rotation with non-host plants to disrupt the nematode's life cycle, application of soil fumigants or systemic nematicides in high-pressure areas, and the use of resistant or tolerant cultivars. Maintaining robust soil health through proper fertilization also allows plants to better tolerate nematode feeding and sustain productivity despite infestation.
