Hoplolaimus, commonly known as the lance nematode, is a significant genus of plant-parasitic nematodes that pose a serious threat to agricultural productivity. These pests are characterized by a strong, well-developed stylet used to pierce plant roots. They act as both ectoparasites, feeding from the outside, and endoparasites, entering the root tissue to cause extensive damage to the vascular system.
The host range of the lance nematode is notably broad, affecting various plants across different environments. Significant hosts include watermelons, carnations, and red clover, as well as several woody species such as Sweet Gum, Plane trees, and Elm. Their ability to switch between hosts makes them difficult to manage in diversified farming systems.
Symptoms of infestation are often observed as stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and wilting during periods of moisture stress. Below the soil surface, the roots show signs of browning, lesion formation, and reduced lateral root development. In severe cases, the entire root system may collapse, leading to a significant reduction in the plant's nutrient and water uptake capabilities.
The development and survival of Hoplolaimus are highly dependent on soil temperature and moisture levels. These nematodes thrive in well-aerated soils and can persist for extended periods, even when a suitable host is not present, by slowing down their metabolic activity. They are often spread through the movement of infested soil on farm machinery, boots, or infected nursery stock.
