Longidorus africanus

Longidorus africanus

Description

Systematic position and type of pathogen: Longidorus africanus is a plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the family Longidoridae within the order Dorylaimida. These are commonly referred to as "needle nematodes" due to their characteristic elongated odontostyle (feeding tube), which they use to penetrate plant roots from the soil environment.

Diseases and host crops: This nematode is a broad polyphage, capable of infesting various economically significant crops such as tomatoes, onions, cotton, and grapevines. The damage is primarily caused by feeding on root tips, which leads to stunted growth, root tip swelling, and the formation of galls. Furthermore, it acts as a vector for various soil-borne viruses, complicating plant health management.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Longidorus africanus is strictly soil-borne. It involves an egg stage, four larval stages, and the adult phase. All motile stages (larvae and adults) are capable of feeding on plant roots. The nematode reproduces sexually, and the duration of its life cycle is highly dependent on environmental temperature and host availability.

Developmental conditions and harm: The pathogen thrives in light-textured soils, such as sandy or sandy-loam soils, where it can move efficiently through pore spaces. Its harm is significant: by damaging root tips, the nematode reduces the plant's ability to uptake water and nutrients, resulting in chlorosis, reduced biomass, and severe yield losses in heavily infested fields.

Protection and control measures: Effective management of this nematode involves integrated pest management (IPM) strategies:

  • Implementation of long-term crop rotation cycles involving non-host crops.
  • Soil fumigation or application of specific nematicides before planting high-value crops.
  • Sanitation practices, including cleaning equipment to prevent spread between fields.
  • Optimizing irrigation and fertilization to maintain plant vigor against nematode feeding.
