Needle nematode

Longidorus spp.

Description

The needle nematode, belonging to the genus Longidorus, is a soil-dwelling plant parasitic nematode known for its significant economic impact. These ectoparasites use a distinctively long stylet to pierce root tissues and feed on plant cells from the outside, often causing severe physiological stress to the host.

This pest affects a wide range of agricultural commodities, such as onions, garlic, citrus, alfalfa, raspberries, sorghum, winter wheat, and corn. Because these nematodes feed on root tips, their primary damage is concentrated where plants absorb water and essential nutrients, leading to poor overall plant vigor.

Symptoms of infestation often include uneven crop growth, yellowing (chlorosis), and stunting of plants. Root systems are typically characterized by club-shaped swellings and necrotic lesions on the tips, which result from the nematode's secretion of digestive enzymes during feeding.

Development is most favorable in moist, sandy soils. The movement of the needle nematode is limited, but it is effectively spread through agricultural activities such as soil movement, contaminated farm machinery, irrigation runoff, and the transplanting of infested nursery stock or root systems.

The danger of Longidorus spp. extends beyond direct physical root damage. They are well-documented vectors of several nepoviruses, which cause severe stunting and yield loss in various crops. Controlling these nematodes requires an integrated strategy to prevent viral outbreaks and maintain soil health.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for needle nematodes involves several key practices. Growers should prioritize crop rotation with non-host plants, the use of green manure to suppress populations, and the application of chemical nematicides when threshold levels are exceeded. Proper sanitation and monitoring of soil health are essential for long-term control success.
