Radopholus (lat. Radopholus) is a genus of migratory endoparasitic nematodes within the phylum Nematoda. The most prominent and economically damaging species is Radopholus similis, commonly referred to as the burrowing nematode. It is a highly specialized parasite that lives and reproduces within the root cortex, causing significant cellular damage and physiological stress to the host plant.
This pathogen infects a wide variety of tropical and subtropical plants, including bananas, citrus fruits, black pepper, and various ornamental species like anthuriums. The characteristic damage involves the formation of necrotic lesions and cavities in the root system, which eventually leads to root rot. As a result, the plant loses its ability to absorb water and essential nutrients effectively.
The life cycle of the burrowing nematode is completed within the roots or the surrounding soil in about three weeks. Both females and larval stages can penetrate healthy roots, causing continuous damage as they tunnel through the tissues. The nematode exhibits a high reproductive rate, which allows population numbers to skyrocket rapidly under optimal conditions, leading to severe localized infections.
Radopholus thrives in warm and moist environments with soil temperatures between 24°C and 30°C. It is primarily spread through infested planting material, such as suckers, rhizomes, and cuttings. Secondary spread occurs through soil movement, contaminated tools, machinery, and flowing irrigation water, making it a critical quarantine pest in many agricultural regions globally.
The economic impact of Radopholus is substantial, causing stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and the "toppling" syndrome, where plants collapse due to weakened root systems. Management strategies focus on prevention: using nematode-free planting stock, hot water treatment of propagation material, solarization, and the cultivation of resistant or tolerant crop varieties to minimize losses in infested areas.
