Blueberry bud mite
Acalitus vaccinii
Description
The blueberry bud mite (Acalitus vaccinii) is a microscopic pest classified within the family Eriophyidae. This species is a significant threat to highbush blueberry cultivation, as it specializes in feeding on the tissues of plants within the Ericaceae family, often leading to severe economic losses in fruit production.
The primary hosts of this mite are Vaccinium species, with commercial blueberries being particularly susceptible. Due to their minute size, they are often undetected until significant damage occurs. Dispersal mainly happens through infested nursery stock or by wind, which helps them spread across commercial fields effectively.
The biological cycle of the mite is strictly tied to the phenological stages of the blueberry plant. Mites spend the winter as adult females tucked inside the scales of vegetative and flower buds. When spring temperatures rise, the mites emerge to feed and begin the egg-laying process, completing several generations throughout the growing season.
The main symptom of an infestation is the deformation of buds, which often fail to open properly or produce stunted, twisted shoots. Affected areas may develop a reddish or bronze discoloration. Heavy infestations cause the drop of flower buds and early fruit, drastically reducing the total yield potential of the plantation.
Control strategies for the blueberry bud mite require an integrated approach. Essential measures include:
- Sourcing certified mite-free planting stock.
- Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches to reduce local populations.
- Applying systemic or contact acaricides during the late dormant phase before bud break.
- Regular monitoring of buds under a microscope to determine the timing of chemical interventions.
Successful management relies heavily on preventative measures, as once the mites are protected within the developing bud structures, chemical control becomes considerably less effective. Regular inspections during the dormant season are crucial for maintaining the health of the blueberry crop.
