The genus Acanthoderes belongs to the family Cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorn beetles, within the order Coleoptera. These insects are specialized wood-boring organisms that play a specific role in forest ecology by colonizing woody plants, often focusing on stressed or declining timber species.

These pests primarily target various deciduous tree species, including oak, beech, alder, and occasionally fruit trees. They prefer trees that are already compromised due to environmental stress, disease, or mechanical damage, utilizing the inner bark and sapwood as a primary nutrient source for their developing larvae.

The life cycle of Acanthoderes typically spans one to two years, depending on environmental factors such as temperature and humidity. Adult beetles emerge to mate, and females deposit eggs into crevices in the bark. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the tree, creating intricate galleries that disrupt the flow of sap and eventually lead to significant internal structural damage.

The damage caused by these beetles is characterized by the presence of frass (bore dust) near the entry points and tunnels found under the bark. As the infestation progresses, the interrupted nutrient transport causes localized dieback, reduced vigor, and, in severe cases, the death of the entire host tree, which creates economic losses in both timber and landscape horticulture.
