Within this diverse group, this species is categorized under the subfamily Lamiinae, which are known for their wood-boring habits that often affect the health of trees and woody shrubs.

Host plants. This pest primarily targets broad-leaved trees. It is known to infest various deciduous species, particularly those that are already stressed due to environmental factors, mechanical damage, or competition. While primarily found in forest ecosystems, it can occasionally impact orchards if the trees are not properly maintained.

Biology and lifecycle. The life cycle of Acanthoderes daviesi involves several stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs into cracks in the bark. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the cambium and xylem layers. They feed extensively within the wood for one or more seasons before pupating and emerging as adults, often leaving behind distinct exit holes.

Damage and economic impact. The larval feeding galleries significantly disrupt the transport of water and nutrients within the tree. This disruption causes localized dieback, loss of vigor, and can eventually lead to the death of the host tree. Furthermore, the boreholes created by the larvae serve as entry points for secondary pathogens, such as fungi and bacteria.

This includes systematic sanitation, such as removing infested branches or entire trees to reduce population density.
