Description

The Pink tea mite (Acaphylla theae) is a significant pest belonging to the family Eriophyidae within the order Trombidiformes. As an eriophyid mite, it is invisible to the naked eye but possesses specialized mouthparts designed to pierce plant tissues and extract cell sap, which is the primary cause of plant physiological stress.

This mite is highly host-specific, primarily targeting the tea plant (Camellia sinensis). It typically colonizes the undersides of young tea leaves and dormant buds. Due to its restricted host range, the pest is a constant concern for commercial tea cultivation globally, especially in tropical and subtropical climates.

The biology of Acaphylla theae is characterized by a rapid reproductive cycle under conditions of high humidity and moderate temperatures. The mites overwinter in buds or bark crevices, and as soon as favorable conditions arise, they disperse to new foliage. Their population density can reach massive numbers if not managed early in the season.

The damage caused by the mite is manifested through physiological discoloration and structural degradation. Infected leaves exhibit a bronze or pinkish tint due to the destruction of chlorophyll and other cellular components. This direct feeding leads to several outcomes:

  • Reduction in tea leaf yield and quality.
  • Drying and curling of young buds.
  • Premature defoliation of the tea bush.
  • Reduced vitality and stunted development of the plant.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Chemical control using systemic or contact acaricides is necessary during peak infestation periods. However, it is essential to rotate products to prevent resistance development. Furthermore, maintaining optimal plant health through proper fertilization and pruning, along with the preservation of natural predators, forms the backbone of a successful long-term control strategy.
