Acaropsis aegyptiaca

Acaropsis aegyptiaca is a mite species within the family Cheyletidae, order Acariformes. Known primarily as a predatory mite often associated with stored products, it frequently inhabits granaries and food storage facilities, where it may prey on other small arthropods while significantly affecting the sanitary quality of stored agricultural commodities.

This pest is found infesting a wide range of products, including bulk cereals, flour, dried fruits, and oilseeds. It thrives in environments where storage conditions—particularly temperature and relative humidity—are not strictly controlled, allowing it to move easily through grain masses and settle in deep structural crevices of storage units.

The biology and lifecycle of Acaropsis aegyptiaca are driven by ambient conditions. The mite undergoes several developmental stages, including egg, larva, and nymph, before reaching maturity. Under optimal conditions of high humidity, the generation turnover is rapid, allowing the population to reach damaging levels in a very short period of time.

The damage caused by this mite is mainly due to the contamination of goods with fecal matter, cast skins, and fragments of dead mites. This reduces the commercial value of the grain, causes off-flavors, and can render the product unsuitable for processing into human food or animal feed, leading to significant economic losses for producers and distributors.

To prevent and manage infestations, farmers and warehouse managers should implement the following strategies:

• Maintain grain moisture content below 14% to inhibit mite development.
• Ensure strict sanitation protocols in warehouses to eliminate food sources.
