Description
The pigeonpea mite (Aceria cajani) is a microscopic pest classified within the family Eriophyidae and the order Trombidiformes. This organism is highly specialized, primarily targeting members of the Fabaceae family, and has become a significant constraint to agricultural production in regions where its host plants are cultivated.
The primary host crop for Aceria cajani is pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan). This pest is globally recognized not just for the direct damage caused by feeding on plant sap, but primarily for its role as the sole vector of the pigeonpea sterility mosaic virus (PPSMV), a devastating pathogen that renders plants unproductive.
Regarding its biology, the mite completes its entire life cycle on the host plant, moving through egg, larva, protonymph, and adult stages. Because of its tiny size, the mite is easily dispersed by wind currents, which allows for rapid migration from older, infected fields to newly planted ones, leading to early-season outbreaks.
The damage caused by this pest is characterized by severe leaf distortion, chlorosis, and the stunted growth of terminal shoots, often forming clusters of foliage known as "witches' brooms." Due to the associated virus, affected plants fail to produce flowers or pods, resulting in total yield loss in severely infested areas.
Management strategies focus on integrated pest management practices. Key approaches include:
- Cultivation of resistant or tolerant pigeonpea genotypes.
- Strict crop sanitation to remove infected volunteer plants before sowing.
- Avoiding the overlapping of cropping seasons to break the mite's life cycle.
- Limiting the use of chemical acaricides to instances where the pest pressure significantly threatens seedling establishment.
