Description
Systematic position. The pecan leaf curl mite (Aceria caryae) belongs to the order Trombidiformes and the family Eriophyidae. These microscopic organisms are known as four-legged mites and are significant pests of specific nut-producing tree species.
Host plants. This pest primarily targets trees within the Carya genus. Pecan trees (Carya illinoinensis) are the most economically important hosts, where mite infestations can become problematic in both nursery settings and mature commercial orchards.
Biology and life cycle. Aceria caryae overwinter as fertilized females hidden within dormant buds or under tree bark crevices. As soon as the buds begin to swell and break in the spring, the mites emerge and move onto the developing foliage to initiate their feeding and breeding cycle.
Damage symptoms. The feeding activity of these mites triggers the formation of characteristic leaf galls. These structures appear as raised, bumpy areas on the upper leaf surface, while the underside exhibits velvety patches known as erinea. Severe infestations can cause leaf distortion, curling, and premature leaf drop.
Control measures. Management of Aceria caryae is challenging due to the protected environment within the galls. Effective control relies on well-timed early-season applications of miticides when mites are exposed during their migration from dormant buds to new leaves. Cultural practices, such as removing heavily infested plant debris, also play a crucial role in maintaining healthy orchards.
