Description
Aceria caulicecis is a microscopic mite belonging to the family Eriophyidae within the order Trombidiformes. These organisms are highly specialized plant parasites known for their ability to manipulate the host plant's growth to create galls, which serve as both a food source and a protective shelter for the mite colony.
The primary hosts for this species are various willow species (Salix spp.). The mites preferentially colonize developing tissues, such as young shoots, petioles, and buds. By injecting specific substances during feeding, they disrupt normal plant cell differentiation, leading to the formation of visible, gall-like structures on the surface of the plant organs.
The life cycle of the mite is synchronized with the phenology of the willow tree. Overwintering females emerge in the spring, migrating to fresh buds to begin feeding and reproduction. Within the growing season, the mite completes multiple overlapping generations. This rapid reproductive rate allows the population to cause significant damage if environmental conditions are favorable.
The degree of damage is characterized by the presence of unsightly swellings or galls on the shoots and foliage. While the direct mortality of the tree is rare, heavy infestations can lead to stunted growth, distorted shoots, and reduced overall vigor. The presence of galls also creates entry points for secondary pathogens, potentially worsening the plant's health status.
Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this mite. Strategies include:
- Sanitary pruning of infested shoots to reduce the overwintering population.
- Monitoring of shoot elongation periods to time chemical applications.
- Application of systemic acaricides during the migration phase, before the gall tissue fully encloses the mites.
